To convert a decimal to a fraction: Set up as fraction in this manner: .225/1 Move the decimal point to the right as many digits as you have numbers on the right of the decimal, and add that many zeroes to the bottom number: 225/1000 Reduce the fraction to its lowest terms: 9/40

2.25 can also be considered 2 + 0.25. We will hold the 2 for now and convert the decimal 0.25 to the fraction 1/4 (0.25 goes to the hundredths place after the decimal point, thus it is out of a hundred, and 25/100 reduces to 1/4). This leaves us with 2 + 1/4, or 8/4 + 1/4 when we find a common denominator. We simplify this by combining into one fraction, (8+1)/4 = 9/4.

Once you recognize that 0.25 equals 1/4 and that your decimal is 2 1/4, you can also multiply the integer of the mixed number by the denominator and add the numerator, and then divide all of that by the denominator to get your fraction. In other words, (4 * 2 + 1)/4 = 9/4.
