traditionally, milli = 1000 in latin (i.e. millimeters, 1000 mm=1 meter). you could also think of a millenium, which lasts 1000 years, which is why the roman numeral for 1000 is M. however, if the m in the "milligrams" has a tail on it , that means it is actually micro-, not milli-, due to the use of the greek letter "Mu" (pronounced "mew"), this time in its lowercase form. micro is equal to one millionith, or numerically, micro=10 to the negative 6th power. ( 1 micro-anything = 1 x 10^-6, or .000001) so to answer your question, 2 milligrams would be equal to .002 grams. however, 2 MICROgrams would be equal to .000002 grams. be sure to check which kind of letter M is used.

2 grams = (2 x 1,000) = 2,000 milligrams
