It depends which number is larger. If if subtract a negative number, you are additioning it; yet if you are adding a negative number or subtacting a positive number, you are just subtracting. -x - (-y) = -x +y - (-x) + (-y) = x - y -3 - (-5) = -3 +5 = 2 -4 - (-2) = -4 +2 = -2

It equals a negative plus a positive. Unlike multiplication, subtraction and addition with negatives doesn't have a set negative or positive outcome.
