It is better to do this with a venn diagram and I suggest drawing one. A is liking chips B is liking peanuts A intersect B is liking both. A union B is liking either peanuts or chips or both We want the complement of A union B which is A complement intersect B complement by DeMorgans law. A complement is not liking chips B complement is not liking peanuts Now if we add 25+45 and then subtract 10 that will be the percent that like chips or peanuts but NOT both and this is 60 percent. This is P(A) union P(B)-P(A intersect B) The negation of this is those who do not like chips and do not like peanuts-(those who don't like both) Since the total is 100%, 100%-60% is 40% 40% do not like either. You could also reason that there must be 15 % who like only chips and 35 percent who like only peanuts since 15%+10%=25% and 15%+10%=45. So the number who like either chips or peanuts but NOT both is 15+35=60 Now the number who like neither is 100-60 or 40% 40% is A complement intersect B complement.

Is percent a discrete or continuous variable?

It depends how we have computed %age. By and large, percentage is a summary statistic. Its a categorical variable (may be nominal or ordinal). That way its a discrete. In case of assay or yield computations it becomes a continuous variable. Naresh K Chawla nkchawla@gmail.com

What is the difference between percent abundance and relative abundance?

"Percent abundance" and "relative abundance" are terms commonly used in the context of chemistry, particularly in relation to isotopes and the composition of elements. While they are often used interchangeably, there can be a subtle distinction between the two terms, depending on the context. Percent Abundance: Percent abundance refers to the proportion or percentage of a specific isotope within a sample of an element. It is calculated by dividing the number of atoms of a particular isotope by the total number of atoms of that element in the sample and then multiplying by 100. Percent abundance is a measure of how much of a particular isotope is present compared to the other isotopes of the same element. It provides information about the distribution of isotopes in a sample. Relative Abundance: Relative abundance also refers to the proportion of a specific isotope within a sample of an element. However, the term "relative" implies a comparison with other isotopes rather than expressing the value as a percentage. Relative abundance is often used when discussing isotopic ratios without converting them into percentages. It's more of a ratio or fraction that describes the ratio of the amount of one isotope to the total amount of all isotopes of the same element in a sample. In summary, while the terms are often used interchangeably and refer to the same basic conceptโ€”the proportion of a particular isotope in a sampleโ€”percent abundance" specifically conveys this proportion as a percentage, whereas "relative abundance" focuses on the ratio or fraction without necessarily converting it into a percentage. The choice of term might depend on the context of the discussion and the preferences of the speaker or writer.
