It should be located "an arms reach" from your condenser.
Some form of disconnect is wise and safe to have for performing service work either a buss main or external and should be within 5 feet in sight of the panel.
The air conditioner dryer in your Ford Explorer, is located on the top of the air conditioner compressor. The dryer should be labeled.
