Can an older savage model 24 over-under 22-410 with the 410 chambered at 3 inches use a 2 and one half inch 410 shell?

I got my first model 24 when I was 14. Now I'm 58 and looking at the very same gun in a cabinet. Was going to give it to my grandson and get him started, but found the price of them is getting up there. I mowed lawns all summer, after my Dad died, and the owner of the hardware store promised my Mom he would train me properly if she would sign for the gun. I've fired thousands of 2 1/2" [yes it's safe], & 3" shells, [includind slug loads] and even shortened some of the 3 inchers to 2 1/2 when they weakened from too much reloading. The bigger shells are easier to reload many times, but the .410's don't hold up to more than 2 reloads without weakening, so you have to slice them off. No worries, the old model 24 is so tight, nothing can happen, at least not to me in the last 44 years or so Tom Smith, Wooster Ohio

these can be foiund at e-gunparts.com i just had to get one to repair one of these combo guns. it took about 1 year for them to get them in stock though. i just purchased end of 2008.

After the 1968 Federal Gun Control Act, it became mandatory. Before that, many did not have a serial number. Crime was wiped out with the serial number addition. Yeah, right.
