Best Answer

No. It has to lie in between -1 an +1 inclusive.

Cos x = adjecent/hypotenuse and for cos x to be greater than 1, you need the adjacent to be bigger than the hypotenuse. The hypotenuse is always the biggest side.

What trigonometric ratios cannot be greater than one?

Sine and cosine.

Why can tangent values be greater than 1 but sine and cosine values cannot be greater than 1?

Sine and cosine cannot be greater than 1 because they are the Y and X values of a point on the unit circle. Tangent, on the other hand, is sine over cosine, so its domain is (-infinity,+infinity), with an asymptote occurring every odd pi/2.

What is the range of the cosine function?

The cosine function, like all of the trigonometric functions, is periodic about the rotation around a circle. Since the cosine is defined as the adjacent/hypotenuse of a right triangle, you can clearly see that its value can never be greater than one or less than -1 since the hypotenuse is always longer than the adjacent side. It turns out that, indeed, the cosine's range is from -1 to 1, written [-1,1].

Power factor is not greater than unity?

Yes. Power factor is never greater than one, nor less than negative one. It is the cosine of the phase angle, and is the ratio of true versus apparent power.A negative power factor can occur in the case of a generator.

Why are the sine and cosine of an angle always less than 1?

Since the hypotenuse (denominator) is always greater than the opposite or adjacent side (numerator), the ratio will always be smaller than one.

Can power factor greater than 1?

not possible. power factor is an cosine angle between current and voltage...

Why is the sine and cosine of a number no less than 1 and no greater than 1?

lol! it can be less than 1 too, upto -1! it cannot be greater than 1 because hypotenuse is always longer than the adjacent and opposite side... (from pythagoras theorem)

Why do cosine to the negative 1th power and cosine cancel out each other?

Cosine to the negative first power and cosine cancel each other out because cosine to the negative first power is one over cosine, and one over anything times anything is just one.
