I suppose you could, but it would be very difficult and you would have to worry about the accuracy. Start at the beginning marker on one side and lay it down til it stops. Have someone mark the ending measurement, start again, keeping track of the footage. Measure all sides of the property and then you should be able to figure the acreage fairly closely.
They make big rolling tape measures you can buy at the big hardware stores for this purpose. It would be much more accurate using this type of "tape measure' than a small square one. Many people do use these.
