each decimal has its own value as a fraction. for example 0.1 is also the same as 1/10 because the one is in the tenths place. this is one of the most important rules of place value. another example can be "write 3.293 as a fraction." when looking at it first it may seem complicated but when you know the steps, it is as easy as 1, 2, 3. 3 is the whole number in the decimal. 2 is in the tenths postion, 9 in the hundredths and 3 in the thousandths. so the numerator is 293. to find the denominator, you have to count the numbers after the decimal point - there are three, and that is how many zeros you add to the one. the fraction therefore is 3293/1000
