When the Spanish brought horses over, some had gotten loose. Others had been stolen and used by the people in the area. However, you are most likely talking about Plains Indians. They used dogs a lot, but dogs required a lot of work because they ate meat. When horses came around to the mid west, the Indians most likely saw them as big dogs that ate grass, required less care, could be ridden and were stronger. Being horses where relatively new, it is amazing how good they are with horses. Why are they good with them? They observed the horses behaviour. they were the Itanchun, the leader. No. The first Aboriginals that came from what is now Russia via the Land Bridge that linked North America to Eurasia came only on foot. The ancient horses that were there were supposedly hunted for food, not trained to be ridden. Some many many years later after their wild ancestors were extinct, horses were brought to North America by the Spaniards in the early 1400's.
