No. They prefer to make a nest out of something but they will use any material to nest in. Material like wood shavings,straw,ground corn husks even shredded newspaper.

The preferred materials are straw and wood shavings as they are absorbent and easier for the farmer to change and dispose of. Hens will drop an egg just about anywhere if nothing else is available.
