∙ 12y agoIn aligned system you place the dimensions( or numerals) above the dimension lines so that they can be read from bottom or right edge of your sheet.
In unidirectional system, all the numerals are placed along the dimension lines, all in the same direction such that they can be read from the bottom edge.
This figure explains it clearly: http://www.maelabs.ucsd.edu/mae_guides/cad/dimensioning/Dimensioning_Fundementals_files/image034.gif

In the unidirectional dimension system, all dimension figures and notes are lettered horizontally and are read from the bottom of the drawing. The unidirectional dimension system is preferred over the aligned system because it is easier to read and understand.

Aligned to usually relates to a fixed object or standard - justified text is aligned to both edges of the page. However, I do not think these are hard-and-fast rules, and I suspect that different sources will claim that one or the other is always correct.
