measure the length and width of room then multiply example:

12 x 12 = 144 square feet

one gallon is approx. 300 sq. ft. but that's one coat

How much should you be able to paint in one hour

The method above will only get you the measurements for floor covering! Not the total square footage of the wall surfaces! What happens if the wall are 8 ft high? how about 12 ft high? This changes the square footage of the room!

Measure the height and width of one wall and multiply together.

Repeat for each wall.

All the totals from each wall together.

A room 12'x10' with 8 ft ceilings would be:

2 walls 8' x 12' = 96sq ft each wall x 2 = 192 sq ft

2 walls 8' x 10' = 80 sq ft each wall x 2 = 160 sq ft.

Add totals together 192 + 160 = 352 sq ft.

(If the ceiling is being painted, add the length and width of the ceiling, multiply together, then add to the total from the walls.

The areas of doors and windows could be subtracted from the total since you do not usually paint these areas with the same paint.

As you can see, 1 gallon of paint will not cover it!

To find the square footage of a room, you multiply the length of the room by the width. For example, is the length is 12 feet and the width is 10 feet, the square footage would be 120 feet. Hope this helps! Measure length of the room and time it by width LxW=SqFt

Unless the room is a perfect square (length and width are the exact same) you cannot determine the length and width without knowing one of the two first. If you know one of these, simply divide the square footage by the measurement that you do know. If the room is a perfect square, the length and width would both be the square root of the square footage.

Measure the complete circumference of the room, including the insides of closets and any other walls you intend to paint. (this is A)

Measure the height of the room at the tallest place. (this is B)

Multiply the circumference by the height to get a rough estimate of the square footage. (A x B = C)

Next, estimate the square footage of any non-painting areas. Windows, doors, wainscoting etc. and subtract that from your square footage.

(height x width = D)

If you intend to paint the ceiling the same colour, add the square footage of that. (length x width = E)

Estimate a bit high and take into consideration how many coats of paint you intend to apply. (C - D + E = Total square footage)

Finally, check the packaging of the paint for the estimated coverage and estimate how many cans of paint you require.

Word of advice, if you are having paint tinted for a "custom" look, be sure you purchase plenty as paint tinted at different times can vary a bit. Better to have a bit extra for touch-ups and repairs than to have to "match" if and when you need just a little more.

Measure the walls and figure out the area. One gallon of average house paint will cover 260 -300 square feet. ( That's a room about 9 x 10 ft.)
