Eratosthenes' method requires that one know or determine the vertical angle of the sun above the horizon or from the zenith (a point directly overhead) at solar noon at two locations along the same line of longitude. The distance between the two locations must also be known.

Who was the first to think the earth was round?

We don't know. Ancient Greek, and even earlier Phoenician, sailors knew that the Earth was round, and both Aristarchus of Samos and Eratosthenes had calculated the size of the Earth with amazing accuracy, considering that it was 2400 years ago.

Did Magellan discover the earth was round?

Although Ferdinand Magellan's expedition was the first circumnavigation of the Earth, many ancient scholars were already aware that the Earth was round. The Greek scientist Eratosthenes was the first to calculate the Earth's circumference, thus proving the Earth's roundness.

What was the name of the greek philosopher who first suggested that the earth might not be flat?

We don't know. We do know that the ancient Greeks in the 3rd century BC knew that the Earth was round, and the mathematician/astronomer Eratosthenes had calculated the size of the Earth within 15% of the correct value. Before that, the even-more-ancient Phoenicians almost certainly knew that the Earth was round. This is pretty obvious to a sailor, and the Phoenicians were the expert sailors of the age.

Why did aristole conclude that earth was round?

Actually Aristole didn't conclude this theory. Gallileo proved the Earth was round. Eratosthenes of Cyren put the idea out in the open, but Nicholas Copernicus and Galileo Galilei showed the theory to the public.

Did the ancient Greeks think the earth was round?

Initially proposed by Pythagoras, Eratosthenes in about 240 BCE had calculated its circumference fairly accurately.

Who founded the earth is round?

The idea of a round Earth appears to have originated in Greek Philosophy. Aristotle provided the first evidence of a round Earth, noting that explorers traveling south saw southern constellations rise higher above the horizon and that Earth cast a round shadow on the moon. Eratosthenes used the angle of sunlight at different latitudes to estimate Earth's circumference with surprising accuracy.

Who was the first person to discover that the Earth is round?

Greek and Phoenician mariners and astronomers 2500 years ago knew that the Earth was spherical, because of the way ships disappeared by sinking below the horizon as they sailed from shore. We have no idea who was the first to realize it, but the Greek mathematician Eratosthenes used observations of the Sun's angle at noon to calculate the diameter of the Earth - a computation that ONLY would have made sense if he knew the Earth to be round. How did Aristotle prove the earth was round?

He didn't. Gallileo proved the earth was round. Eratosthenes of Cyrene first put the motion forward and even calculated the diameter, but Nicholas Copernicus and Galileo Galilei first put the idea into the public eye.

Describe how eratosthenes measure the size of Earth?

Eratosthenes measured the size of Earth by using the Sun's angles, as well as a bit of geometry.

Who discoverd that the earth was round?

Some believe is was the Greek scholar Eratosthenes, who sought and succeeded to prove the earth was spherical over 2000 years ago. Carl Sagan's 'Cosmos' wrote about him and how he accomplished this.

When did Eratosthenes discover that the earth is not flat?

He did not do so. Earth was well-known to be a globe for at least two hundred years before Eratosthenes' time. What Eratosthenes did was to measure the earth's circumference for the first time. He did that at some time between 236 BC and 195 BC.

Who first suggested that the world was round?

We do not know who was the FIRST to argue that the Earth is round, but 2400 years ago, the Greek and Phoenician astronomers and mathematicians already knew it. The Greek mathematician Eratosthenes calculated the diameter if the Earth quite accurately by observing that on the summer solstice, the Sun's light would shine straight down into a deep well, but on the same date in another city, the Sun's rays strike the Earth at an angle.
