this is the same as 2 - (1). You can derive this by multiplying everything in the brackets by -1 (thus getting rid of the minus before the brackets). Alternatively you say that the bracket part (2 - 1) adds up to 1 and you get the same answer 2 - (1). Another way is just to use the rule that 2 minuses are a plus so the "-" sign before the bracket converts the bracket part from (2 - 1) into (-2 + 1), so 2 - (2 - 1) is still the same as 2 - (1).
