by dividing by 6 .
and if the eighth is whole then divide by 7 .

I have a different take; if I have misunderstood the question then I trust a kind contributor will delete this contribution. The questioner may be asking how to divide a square into pieces each one eighth the size of the original square. The pieces will be right triangles of equal size. They will not all be congruent with one another, however. Four will be congruent with each other, and the remaining four will be congruent with each other. Draw lines connecting opposite vertices; they will meet at the center. Then draw lines connecting the centers of opposite sides.
Another way is to end up with 8 identical rectangles. Divide the width into 8 equal parts, and divide the height into 8 equal parts. For example: a square 8 inches per side. Then divide the square into 4 inch by 2 inch rectangles. There will be 8 of them.
Divide it by four
The question can be rewritten as how many eighths are in a quarter. Or in other words, what is (1/4)/(1/8). The way to divide by a fraction is to multiply by its denominator then divide by it's numerator. In this case, multiplying 1/4 by 8 then dividing by 1 gives us 8/4. This can be simplified to 2.Thus there are 2 eighths of an inch in a quarter inch.
the simplest form of that fraction is 1/6. divide 13 by 13 is equal to 1 and divide 78 by 13 and you get 6.

You can divide it into halfs, fourths, eighths, sixteenths, thirty seconds, etc.

The idea is to divide 1/8 divided by 1/5. This is the same as 1/8 times 5/1.
To find this divide 100 by 1/8 That is (100)/(1/8) = 800
You can divide it into halfs, fourths, eighths, sixteenths, thirty seconds, etc.
1 and 1 eighths
To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal. In this instance, 5/8 / 1/3 = 5/8 x 3 = 1 7/8 or one and seven eighths. Expressed as a decimal, this is equal to 1.875.
1 and 4/8 has 12 eighths.
5/8 / (1/6) = 5/8 * (6/1) = 5/4 * 3 = 15/4
