Assuming that no other points are scored, a team can score 5 points through the following (in any order): * Getting a field goal (3pts) * Receiving a safety (2pts) A field goal is achieved when, in the course of normal play, the coach/manager decides that the team is no longer able/likely to achieve a touchdown but is close enough to the goal line (and the uprights) to kick the ball through to earn three points. A safety is earned for team A, in the course of normal play, when team A tackles a member of team B who is carrying the ball behind their own goal line.
