Density studies the compactness of something.

Take mass as something that causes it to have weight.

Take volume as the amount of three-dimensional space occupied by an object.

When the mass of a certain object A is greater than the volume of a certain other object B, then the object is said to be VERY COMPACT (high density) and vice versa.

If those measurements have already been made and you have the results,

simply divide the mass by the volume, and the quotient is the density.

How do you determine the identity of an unknown substance by observing its mass and volume?

All you can do with mass and volume is to determine the density of the substance. density = mass / volume or p=m/v after you determine the density, you can look on any density table and find the substance you are looking for. good look. -julio

How could density be used to determine the mass of a particular volume of a substance?

In a set volume of any substance increasing the density increases its mass

Why do scientist measure mass and volume?

So they can determine the density of a substance. Density = mass/volume. Density can be used to identify a substance.

What does the density of a substance determine?

It determines the mass of the substance per unit volume.

What is a property of a substance that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance?

Anything that has mass and occupies volume is called matter. In any substance its volume can vary but the mass is its intrinsic property. Mass of a particular substance remains the same anywhere we go but that is not the case for weight of a substance.

How do you get the relative density of a substance?

Weigh it to determine the mass, then determine how much volume it displaces (in something it does not dissolve in). Divide mass by volume, you've got density.

How can you determine the density of a substance?

Use the formula density = mass divided by volume.

What are you things do you need to know about a substance to determine its density?

it's mass, and it's volume.

What do you call the amount of material a substance has in it?

Matter occupies space and has mass. As such, the amount of matter present in a substance will determine its mass as well as its volume.

If you have a mass of 15.375g you determine that the volume by displacement to be 5.13mL what is the density of the substance?

The density of this mass is about 3 g/mL
