Before 1763, the citizens of the American Colonies had the same rights as the citizens living in England. They had the right to a trial by jury instead of by kangaroo courts. Their taxes were collected through the standard procedure instead of by thugs. The members of the colonial legislatures could speak their minds without danger of being taken off the floor of the legislative chamber and being shot. Search warrants were required. Government agents could not enter any dwelling and simply take what they wanted. In other words, Americans enjoyed the rights of Englishmen. All that changed in 1763. In 1783 when the United States worked out the peace agreement with England, the British representative offered to return to the way things were before 1763. Benjamin Franklin announced that it was too late. He refused the offer and demanded independence.
