Newton was an intensely private person, and very concerned with his image, so it is difficult to know exact details of his life. We know that he had no interest in the farming life of his family, and excelled in academics enough to be sent to Trinity College, then (and still now) a prestigious institute of higher learning. Although he was an undistinguished student there, his private studies just before and just after his graduation in 1665 show an intensely fertile mind.

It is my belief that pretty much all humans are born with a desire to understand our physical world -- you don't have to prod children to ask, "Why is the sky blue?", they just WANT TO KNOW. Newton was one of those people fortunate enough to both (1) never lose this interest and (2) develop a way to answer the questions he wanted answers to.
