First you have to know what kind of equation you have. The most common is standard form and y-intercept form. The easiest to understand is y-intercept form(In my opinion).

Y-intercept form uses this formula: y=mx+b where m=slope and b=y-intercept.

So if you have y=2x+5, you would solve it like this:

First ou would plot the point (0,5) since the y-intercept is 5 which means x=0 and y=5.

Then from your point either go up two, right one....or go down two, left one and put the point down. Then draw a line through your points.

Some points that should fall on the line are (0,5), (1,7), (2,9), (-1, 3), (-2,1)

The general form of a linear equation in 2-D is

ax + by + c = 0

If the equation is in the form y = mx + c, its general form is mx - y + c = 0,

that is, a = m, b = -1 and c remains unchanged.

Step 1: Cover up the y term. That leaves ax + c = 0 which gives x = -c/a.

Step 2: Mark the point P = (-c/a, 0) on the coordinate plane.

Step 3: Cover up the x term. That leaves by + c = 0 which gives y = -c/b. Step 4: Mark the point Q = (0, -c/b) on the coordinate plane.Step 5: Join up P and Q and extend in both directions.
