Providing the radical has then just add/subtract.

e.g.

4sqrt(3) + (/-)7sqrt(3) .

The radical has tha same coefficient of 'sqrt(3)'

Hence it becomes 11sqrt(3) ( or - 3sqrt(3))

However, if the radicals are different then

4sqrt(3) + 7sqrt(2) . cannot be taken any further.

Can you add or subtract under the radical?

No, you cannot add or subtract under the radical. The radical represents the square root function, and it only operates on the number or expression that is inside the radical. To add or subtract, you need to simplify the expressions inside the radical first.

If you need to add radical expressions that have different radicands you should determine whether you can subtract a radical expression and then combine like terms?

false , i tried it on apex so its right

How is combining like terms similar to adding and subtracting square roots?

In surd form, square roots need to be have the same radical term before you can add or subtract them. However, unlike in algebraic expressions, it is possible to add or subtract square roots using approximate (decimal) values.
