To convert a mixed number to an improper fraction (as for division using the number), change the whole number into a fraction with the same denominator as the fractional part, then add the numerators.

To convert the whole number, multiply by the value of 1 as a fraction, where the numerator and denominator are the same as your fraction's denominator.

Example : Convert 3 5/8 to an improper fraction

The value of 1 used is 8/8, so the whole number 3 becomes (3x8)/8 or 24/8 and your total is

3 5/8 = 24/8 + 5/8 = 29/8

Multiply the denominator by the whole number, add the numerator, and put the total over the denominator.
Multiply the whole number times the denominator, add the numerator to that total and put that total over the denominator. Example: 3 and 1/2. 3 times 2 is 6 plus 1 is 7 over 2 is 7/2.
Leave the denominator as it is. For the new numerator, multiply the whole part by the denominator and add the old numerator. So, ab/c = (a*c + b)/c

You divide the numerator by the denominator. The integer result of the division is the whole number (integer) of the mixed number, put any remainder over the original denominator to create the fraction part (which may be reducible to a simpler form).

Examples:

The fraction 19/7 -- Divide 19 by 7. The result is 2, with a remainder of 5, so the mixed number is 2 5/7.

The fraction 21/6 -- Divide 21 by 6. The result is 3, with a remainder of 3, so the mixed number is 3 3/6 which can be simplified to 3 1/2.

* Divide the top number in the fraction by the bottom number (find the largest whole number which when multiplied by the bottom number in the fraction is still less than the top number).

* However much is left over (the remainder) is then expressed as this value divided by the bottom number in the original fraction.

An example:

So for 22/7.

7 will divide into 22, 3 whole times (7 * 3 is 21 and 7 *4 is 28 - that's too much!)

So we know the first part of our mixed number will be 3.

7 * 3 is 21 but the number at the top of the fraction is 22 so that leaves a remainder of 1. We therefore express this as 1/7.

So 22/7 is 3 1/7.

Divide the numerator by the denominator. If the denominator goes into the numerator evenly, then the improper fraction is, in fact, an integer. If the denominator does not go into the numerator evenly, then you will have an integer quotient and a remainder. The integer quotient is the integer part of the mixed number and the remainder, divided by the denominator, is the fractional part.

So, for example, if you have 36/9 then the denominator, 9, goes into the numerator 4 times, so the answer is 4.

For 37/9, the denominator, 9, goes into the numerator (37), 4 times with a remainder of 1. So the answer is 4 1/9.

Multiply the denominator (bottom) by the integet part of the mixed number and then add the numerator (top) of the fractional part. This is the numerator of the improper fraction. The denominator remains the same.

So, for example,

34/5 = (5*3 + 4)/5 = (15+4)/5 = 19/5
