Say you have 2 and a half you multiply the whole number by the denominator and then add the number to the numerator. You keep the same denominator as you had before and it comes out as your improper fraction.
If you mean a mixed number to improper fraction, then for example:

3 1/2

You would multiply 2x3 and add 1

2x3+1(denominator times the "big" number plus numerator)
