Technically you can't convert tons to meters because a ton is a unit of weight and a meter is a unit of volume.

However, if you are asking how to convert cubic meters to tons, you can do so provide you know the density of the material being measured AND you know whether you want metric tons (tonnes, or 1000 kg) or US tons (2000 US pounds).

Tonnes = cubic meters (m3) * Density (Kg / m3)

US tons = Tonnes * 1.10231

This question cannot be answered sensibly. A cubic metre is a measure of volume, with dimensions [L3]. A ton is a measure of mass, with dimensions [M]. Basic dimensional analysis teaches that you cannot convert between measures with different dimensions such as these without additional information. It takes only a little mental effort to compare a cubic metre of water and a cubic metre of Mercury (a liquid) and come to the conclusion that the two will have very different masses.

----------------------------------

However, for the purposes of something such as tank volumes for shipping liquids, where quantities are measured by weight in metric tons (mt), a quantity of liquid given in mt can be roughly converted to cubic meters (cbm) utilising the specific gravity (sg) of the liquid.

mt / sg = cbm

For example, if you have 1,000 mt of liquid with a specific gravity of 1.1:

1,000 / 1.1 = approximately 909.091 cbm

Note that sg is temperature specific, so the volume of a given liquid will vary depending on the temperature of said liquid.

The conversion can also be done in reverse to roughly determine the number of mt that will fit into a specific volume of cbm.

The conversion of the weight of a liquid in metric tonnes to cubic metres is not complicated.

The Mass of any substance is known and is given as grammes per cubic centimetre at a specific temperature. eg. Pure water has a mass of 1 gramme per cc at 4 degrees C. Therefore 1 metric tonne of pure water occupies 1 cubic metre at 4 degrees C. The volume occupied is dependant on both the mass and the temperature (T) of the liquid. Another example is Ethyl alcohol ( the good stuff) which has a density of .785g/cc at 25 deg C so 1 cubic metre of drinking alcohol (pure) has a weight of 785kg per cubic metre. 1 metric tonne of ethyl alcohol at 25 deg C will occupy 1.274 cubic metres. So the calculation of the space occupied by a liquid is as has been stated 1000/Density(Sg) at T which gives us the value (weight) of 1 cubic metre of the liquid at the stated temperature. In the case of the ethyl alcohol we then divide volume in litres by the weight which gives us the figure of 1.2738 or 1.274 rounded up. Which just happens to be the volume in cubic metres of 1 metric tonne of ethyl alcohol at 25 deg C. It is necessary to take into account the fact that all substances liquid or solid, expand or contract depending on temperature. Provision must therefore be made for this when designing containment vessels. Pure water expands by approx 9.2% on freezing and will rupture the container if no allowance is made for this expansion.
