There many ways and you need to find one that you are comfortable with.

My way I:

14*36 = 14*(30+6) = 14*30 + 14*6 = 14*3*10 + 14*6 = 42*10 + 14*6

= 420 + 84 = 420 + 80 + 4 = 500 + 4 = 504

I do not go through each step separately. They are given here to illustrate processes that go through my mind.

My way II:

14*36 = 14*12*3 = (13+1)*(13-1)*3 = (132 - 1)*3 = (169 - 1)*3 = [(170 - 1) - 1]*3

= (170 - 2)*3 = 170*3 - 2*3 = 17*3*10 - 2*3 = 51*10 - 2*3 = 510 - 6 = 504
