Scientific notation is when you take very big or very small numbers and make them easy to read. for instance 67000000 would be 6.7 x 10^7 because you move the decimal 7 places to the left. If you moved it to the right it would be a negative exponent like 0.0000089 would be 8.9 x10^-6

Note: the first part like above was 6.7 and 8.9 has to be a number between 1-10 and the second part is always 10 to a exponent. If u were confused above ^ means the next # is an exponent to the # before it.

Scientific notations are used when you are trying to make a number bigger or smaller. So if you have 1200000 you have to get it in between 1 and 9. So, the decimal would originally be after the last zero since it is a whole number. Move the decimal to the left until you have a number between 1-9, in this case 1.2.

So you moved the decimal 6 places to the left; it is written 1.2 X 10 to the 6th power. If you have the number .0000012, then move the decimal 6 places to the right so, it is between the 1 and the two. Write it as 1.2 X 10 to the NEGATIVE 6th power. Hope this helps. (:

To do scientific notation, you take the number. Maybe it is 93,000,000. Then divide by 10 as many times as you need to until the answer is below 10, but above 1.

(93,000,000 / 10,000,000) When you get a number between 10 and 1 (9.3)* Take the number you divided by (10,000,000) and take the number of 0's (There are 7 zeros) and it will become (107) after that you take your (9.3) and your (107) and it is (9.3 * 107) aka (9.3 x 107)

have to make it so there is only one digit before the decimal point. How you do it is using tens with exponents, I will post a few examples about how to solve.

Q. Put 250 in scientific notation

A. 2.5 times 10 to 2 power.

Q. Put 0.533 in scientific notation.

A. 5.33 times 10 to negative 1 power.

If the number (like in example one, 250) is bigger than one than the exponent in your answer is positive, if it is smaller than one (like example two, 0.533) than the exponent in your answer is negative.
