For a start, if you want cubic yards, then all your measurements need to be calculated in yards.

Measure the radius of the cylinder.... half the distance from one side, through the centre, to the other side - this measurement is usually refered to as r. Next, measure the height of the cylinder - this is usually called h.

Now, multiply r by itself, and multiply the result by h.

Now you need to multiply that result by pi - the relationship between a circle and its radius.

This is usually given as 3.1416

Now you've got cubic yards.

If your measurements are taken in feet, then you need to divide the result by 27, which is the number of cubic feet in a cubic yard.
