You need to know how much area you are covering and how thick you want the mulch to be. Roughly 3 inches thick is good enough. That is 3/12 = 0.25 feet thick

Take area in square feet times thickness in feet, which gives a volume in cubic feet, then divide by 27 to covert to cubic yards

For example, if you want to mulch an an area that is 75 feet long and 5 feet wide, the volume is 75 x 5 x .25 = 93.75 cu ft

93.75/27 = 3.5 yards (3 and 1/2 yards)
