Best Answer

First look at the degree of each term: this is the power of the variable. The highest such number, from all the terms in the polynomial is the degree of the polynomial.

Thus

x2 + 1/7*x + 3 has degree 2.

x + 7 - 2x3 + 0.8x5 has degree 5.

The degree of a polynomial is the highest degree of its terms. The degree of a term is the sum of the exponents of the variables that appear in it.

7x2y2 + 4x2 + 5y + 13 is a polynomial with four terms. The first term has a degree of 4, the second term has a degree of 2, the third term has a degree of 1 and the fourth term has a degree of 0. The polynomial has a degree of 4.

How is the degree of of the sum related to the degree of the original polynomials?

Usually the sum will have the same degree as the highest degree of the polynomials that are added. However, it is also possible for the highest term to cancel, for example if one polynomial has an x3, and the other a -x3. In this case, the sum will have a lower degree.
