by using the water displacement method of Archimedes.
For example,a stone's volume(an irregularly-shaped figure) can be measured by dropping it in a graduated cylinder with water(for example 20g water)...then the water will be displaced after you immersed the stone into it(it became 35g).the total displaced water(15g) will be the stone's volume..
this is the same with what happened to Archimedes when he was asked by a king to determine whether his crown was made of pure gold.
for more info, just read some books..lol!

water displacement
Displacement method.... Is the method to find volume of an irregular object
Make a mold of the object and then fill the mold with water and measure the volume of the water.
Volume is the amount of cubic centimeters in an object. To find the volume of a regular shaped object multiply length x width x height. To find an irregular shaped objects volume put water in a container and measure the amount. Place the object in the water and measure the new volume. Subtract the old volume from the new volume and that's your answer. You would write as x cm3. Weight is gravity's pull on an object
It is a method called displacement. Displacement is a method that many scientists use. First you put a certain amount of water in a container (test tube, beaker). Second you Measure how many milliliters of water you put into it. Next you Add your irregular object into the water. Then you measure how many milliliters the water level rose. Then you subtract your second measurement with the irregular shaped object in it by your first measurement without the object in it and it will give you the volume of your irregular shape object.
To measure volume of large irregular shaped objects you need a displacement can

Measure the volume of the object which is same as the volume of the displaced liquid in which that sinks. And measure the mass of the same object from a weighing machine. then use density = mass/volume
you put the shape into sections and find there volumes and add your answers together
1. fill the container with water (make sure you write down what you filled it to) 2. Place object into the container 3. Calulate how much the water rose 4. Find the difference of the two numbers (that will be you volume of the irregular shaped object) 5. All finished!!!

If the body is a solid not soluble in water then we can keep it immersed in a measurable jar. Just noting down the level of water raised and getting the difference in the level with the initial one, we can get the volume of the irregular shaped object.
