As a cylinder is a three dimensional object with volume = {pi}r2h (with r the radius of the circular end and h to height of the cylinder), I presume you mean its surface area:

There are 2 circular ends with area {pi}r2 each.

Plus the curved surface which has one dimension the height of the cylinder, the other the circumference of the circular end, so its area is 2{pi}r x h.

So the total surface area of a cylinder

= 2 x {pi}r2 + 2{pi}r x h

= 2{pi}r(r + h).
