You normally measure the linear dimensions and then calculate the area (square footage).

If you have a rectangular room, you measure its length and width in feet and then multiply the two numbers to get the area of the room in square feet. If the room is not rectangular (eg with a bay, an alcove or an L-shaped room) you will need to divide it up into simpler shapes, calculate the area of each shape and add the areas together.

-- Measure the length of the room, front wall to back wall.

-- Measure the width of the room, side wall to side wall.

-- Multiply the two numbers. Their product is the area of the floor in square feet.

The area of the floor is what they're talking about when they refer to the room's

"square footage". It's the amount of carpet that it would take to do the room.

The ceiling has the same area.
