I am assuming this is a maths question.

The way to square anything is to multiply it by itself.

It doesn't matter if it's a number or if it's a letter expressing a number (this is called a variable and a letter is used because the value of a variable can vary; it is not fixed. For example, the value of x in one question could be completely different in the next question).

An example:

So to square the number 2 we would do: 2 * 2 which equals 4.

To square a letter such as "x" we would do: x * x which equals x2 (x squared).
