How do your borrow from a whole number when subtracting fractions?

A mixed number has a whole number and a fraction. A fraction is a number that is less than whole and that has a denominator underneath a numerator. To add or subtract mixed numbers, add or subtract the fractions, then add or subtract the whole numbers. If the fraction portion of a mixed number, such as 2 5/6, is more than the fraction portion of the mixed number you're trying to subtract from, such as 3 1/6, you must borrow from the whole number of the mixed number you're trying to subtract from to make its fraction bigger... How do you subtract a mixed number by a mixed number?

Here is an example 2 4/5 - 1 2/3 Steps to take #1 ; Convert to improper (top heavy) fractions #2 ; Bring to a common denominator #3 ; Bring the numerators (top) to equivalent values #4 ; Subtract the numertors #5 ; Place over the denomiator #6 ; Brinf back to a mixed numbers. So taking these steps #1 ; 2 4/5 - 1 2/3 = 14/5 - 5/3 #2 ; 5 X 3 = 15 #3 ; 14(3) = 42 & 5(5) = 25 #4 ; 42 - 25 = 17 #5 ; 17/15 #6 ; 17/15 = 1 2/15 The Answer!!!!! NB Addition of mixed numbers is exactly the same except step '4' , where you add the numerators. e.g. 2 4/5 +1 2/3 #1 ; 2 4/5 + 1 2/3 = 14/5 + 5/3 #2 ; 5 X 3 = 15 #3 ; 14(3) = 42 & 5(5) = 25 #4 ; 42 + 25 = 67 #5 ; 67/15 #6 ; 67/15 = 4 7/15 The Answer!!!!!
