Usually you will see an egg partially sticking out of the vent. The female will usually go to the cage bottom, pant, you may see blood at the vent, and otherwise the bird will act really sick. A bird that is eggbound MUST be treated by a certified avian vet immediately or the bird will die.

Hypocalcemia Syndrome or low calcium can be a cause for egg binding a hen. Supplementing the hen with a diet rich in calcium and vitamin 'D' can help as a preventative. Adding a calcium supplement such as crushed shells or store bought high calcium feed and boosting the available light with a high spectrum bulb is recommended.

Malnutrition, from a diet low in calcium such as the wrong seed & grain mix can increase egg binding in hens.

Signs and symptoms

A loss of appetite, depression (not interacting with the rest of the flock), abdominal straining, and sitting fluffed up in the chicken coop. Some hens may pass large wet droppings while others may not pass any droppings at all, due to the egg's interfering with normal defecation.

Help for the hen

A warm water bath can help. Often the hen will pass the egg into the water. Make the water warm, not hot.

Massage the muscles in the area below the cloaca and directly around with olive oil. In many cases, this lead to a successful passing of the egg.

Applying a personal lubricant, such as KY jelly or just plain Vaseline to her vent may also be of help, allowing the egg to slip out.

After

Following passing of the egg. Keep the hen in a warm and quiet area separate from the others, until she is out of shock and back to eating and drinking well.

The Vent of a healthy hen in prime laying age is moist and bright. Older hens dry up and the vent "washes out' in color.
