∙ 8y agoTo replace a 3-way switch you only need to find the common terminal and the rest is very easy. For some devices out there there are four terminals that you can see at the back of the switches. The two holes there are permanently connected and that is the common terminal. The other two holes are not connected to each other at all even if you use a multi-tester to check its continuity at that is the terminal 1 and terminal 2. If you don't have a tester, Just check out the diagram at the back and you will see that the 2 dots are connected which is the common terminal and the other 2 dots are separated and that is the terminal 1 and terminal 2. The common terminal should always connected directly to the power source and the terminal 1 and terminal 2 are always connected to the wires going to the another 3-way switch 9 (which are also terminal 1 and terminal 2). It doesn't matter if you did interchange between the terminal 1 or 2.

∙ 13y agowhen wiring a 3 way light switch u have to have a hot side and a switch side meaning switch one out of the two will be fed with your power 120v or 277v/ the hot wire will connect to the black screw on switch one then run 3 wires to the other switch two of those three wires will connect to the other two screws on switch one and will connect to the same two screws on switch two the third wire is ur neutral wire the white wire u have to carry over to switch two just use wire nuts for the white wire ok now the black screw on switch two will connect to the black wire feeding the light and the white wire u carried over will go to the white wire going to the light also. so you will need to run 2 wires down to switch 1 a hot and neutral/then 3 wires from switch 1 to switch 2/and then 2 wires out of switch 2 going to the light,out of the 3 wires u run from switch 1 to switch 2 the white is the only 1 that goes out to ur light together with the black wire that is connected to the black screw on switch 2 hope u can understand this try draw it out as u read it
