A mixed number is of the form xy/z where x, y and z are all integers.

The corresponding decimal wil be of the form x.abcd... where abcd is some string of digits that may be finite or repeating.

So the x part is easy. So now to go from y/z and abcd...

Well, abcd is the result of long division of y by z (or, if you prefer, of y000.... by z where you keep on adding 0s until

  • either the remainder is zero and the abcd.. terminates or
  • the remainder follows a recurring pattern and then so does the decimal fraction.

Firstly, you will change the decimal into a fraction and then change it into a mixed number. That's the way I learnt it.
