Be open-minded, relax and just think: -"What number should I "add" (algebrically) to +4 so that their sum gives me a -12 ???". Of course it's not a zero and, obviously, the unknown number is not a positive one...! You must go down "deeper" than 12 stairs "underground" (where " -12 " stands) so that after having taken the "order" to go "upstairs" (this is what the sign " + " stands for...!) 4 steps, to be found at the "stair -12". Here it comes the answer: -16. Because "standing" on the "stair -16" you have to go "upstairs" doing exactly 4 steps "upwards" in order to be found on the "stair -12". Easy, isn't it???...

Or, in the symbolic way of your teacher:

m+4=-12 <=> m=-12-4 <=> m=-(12+4) <=> m=-16
