Well, to put it simply, the Pythagorean theorem is an equation to find the measurement of a side of a triangle.Algebra is basically equations, and geometry is the study and measurement of shapes. The equation is a+b=c.

Pythagorean system is

H^2 = a^2 + b^2

In geometry , when knowing the two sides of a right-angled triangle the third side can be calculated.

So if you know the two shorter sides , say a = 3 & b = 4 , then the third hypotenuse can be calculated.

e.g.

H^2 = 3^2 + 4^2

H^2 = 9 + 16

H^2 = 25

H = sqrt(25) = 5

This is the Classic (3,4,5)Pythagorean triangle . Another one is 5,12,13.

Now if you know the hypotenuse and only one of the shorter sides then the other short side can be calculated.

Hence

H^2 = a^2 + b^2

Then

b^2 = H^2 - a^2

Here factoring algebra comes into play.

b^2 = (H - a)(H + a) Note the different signs.

So if we know the hypotenuse , say 13 and the shortest side , say 5.

Then substituting in

b^2 = (13 - 5)(13 + 5)

b^2 = (8)*(18)

b^2 = 144

b = sqrt(144) = 12

So there you have it, a bit of geometry and a bit of algebra. Hope that helps!!!!

What is the Pythagorean theorem?

It states that for any right angle triangle that its hypotenuse when squared is equal to the sum of its squared sides.

When and how to use the Pythagorean theorem?

Definition:Pythagorean theorem (also known as Pythagoras' theorem) is a mathematical statement about the relation among the three sides of a right triangle (right-angled triangle). It states:"In a right angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides."In any right-angled triangle, if the sides forming the right-angle are known as a and b and the hypotenuse as c, then the relation among the three sides of a right triangle is given by this equation: a2 + b2 = c2.When to use it:If the length of two sides of a right angled triangle are already known, you can find the unknown length of the third side. How to use it:As you know the relation among the three sides of a right triangle is represented by the equation a2 + b2 = c2 , substitute the known values in the equation and find out the length of the third side by solving the equation.See the related link.

How is the pythagorean theorem used in modern day times?

The Pythagorean theorem is used for many things today. For example, it can be used for building. Putting in flooring deals with squares and triangles using the Pythagorean Theorem. Some builders use this formula, because they can find the missing sides. The Pythagorean theorem plays an important role in mathematics, too. For example: -It is the basis of trigonometry -using the theorems arithmetic form, it connects algebra and geometry. -It is linked to fractal geometry His theorem is not only important in 2-D geometry, but also in 3-D geometry. Video games environments are drawn in 3-D using all triangles. i got this information from a website called: [See below for the related link to this website]. This website tells you all about how the Pythagorean theorem is used in modern day.

Why was Pythagoras credited for pythagorean theorem?

Hmmm... because HE created it ! Pythagorean theorem is named after the mathematician Pythagoras ! See related link for the Wikipedia article on the gentleman concerned !

Which US President proved the Pythagorean theorem in a new way?

James A. Garfield, the twentieth president of the United States, discovered an original proof of the Pythagorean theorem. The proof is algebraic in nature and uses the formula for the area of a trapezoid. See the link below for details. Garfield is credited with an original proof of this famous theorem. Many of the presidents undoubtedly proved it in geometry class after studying their books.

Where was the Pythagorean Theorem discovered?

It is not known for sure where exactly Pythagorean Theorem was discovered. But Pythagoras a Greek Mathematicians has discovered this. So I would assume in Ancient Greece. I found this related website which explains and also has a calculator.See below for the related link

How can you work out pythagorass theorem?

There are a great number of different proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem. Unfortunately, many of them require diagrams which are hard to reproduce here. Check out the link to Wikipedia's page on the theorem for several different proofs.

Did James Garfield prove the Pythagorean theorem?

I don't think I could make the proof clear without a diagram, so you must check the related links to read it. I will say that it is algebraic in nature and is based on knowing how to find the area of a trapezoid. The first link is a student link and may not stay up for long. The second link contains several proofs of the Pythagorean theorem and you will have to hunt in it to find Garfield's proof, but it is there.
