Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz supply service.

The simple answer for the USA, Canada and countries using similar 120 Volt, 60 Hz mains power supply systems, is " 36 inches" or "about one hundred centimetres".

Always be sure to switch off the breakers at the main panel
before you attempt to do any work
on any mains power circuit.

In countries using 230 Volt, 50 Hz services
totally different wiring regulations
cover the types of switches and sockets which are allowed in wet places
such as bathrooms, kitchens, etc.

Answer for countries in Europe and other world areas running a 50 Hz supply service.

A plate light switch must be at least 0.6m from the edge of the bath or shower and be suitable for the location (IP rated).

A pull-cord switch is the type that should be installed!

No socket outlet must be installed within 3 meters from the edge of the bath or shower basin, so you would need a big shower room to put one in!!
Remember, any circuit installed in a bathroom or shower room (other locations apply) MUST be RCD protected!

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed.

Before you do any work yourself,
on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances,
always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

The CEC states that receptacles installed in bathrooms shall, where practicable, be located at least 1 metre but in no case less than 500 mm from the bathtub or shower stall, this distance being measured horizontally between the receptacle and the bathtub or shower stall, without piercing a wall, partition, or similar obstacle.

Also at least one receptacle shall be installed in each bathroom and wash room with a wash basin(s) and shall be located within 1 metre of any one wash basin.

How do you connect a motor with a wire?

Assuming you want to switch a single phase motor, (such as in a residence), you simply have to connect the switch to the incoming power feed. The outgoing, or "switched power" lead then goes directly to the motor. Note the neutral (grounded conductor, the white wire) and ground wire do not switch but connect directly to the motor. Do not use a residential light switch for this application. There are small switches designed to turn motors on/off. The switch must be rated high enough for the amperage and horsepower of the motor. The amp rating and HP are stamped right on the metal base of the switch. Remember, the switch you install must be in an approved electrical enclosure, not in "open air" to be safe from shock hazard or fire. Use an electrical junction box or mount it right in the unit by the motor if that is convenient. These parts are available at hardware stores. If by chance you're trying to switch a three phase motor, post another question providing the horsepower of the motor and its application, as this may require a motor starter (contactor). As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed. Are there any safety considerations when using a low voltage transfer switch?

Absolutely! Low voltage transfer switches must be installed properly and inspected regularly to ensure safe operation. To avoid any potential electrical hazards, it is important to follow all manufacturer's instructions carefully when installing the switch, including any safety warnings. It is also a good idea to have a qualified electrician inspect the switch periodically for any signs of wear or damage.
