The first 2 numbers specify the diameter of the shaft in 64ths of an inch. The last 2 numbers specify the wall thickness of the shaft in thousands of an inch. For example size 1816 means the outside diameter is 18/64ths of an inch and the wall thickness is 16/1000th of an inch. Each size has a different stiffness which needs to be matched to the bow's draw weight and the length of the arrow. For example, a 50# Recurve @ 30" would require a 2117 shaft (or similar) while a 30# Recurve @ 26" could use something weaker such as a 1816 (or similar).
