I'm taking an equine studies class at my college inKentucky First you need to see what your state law requires. If you have 1 acre then you would never have a green field, it would always be muddy which is very unhealthy for horses hooves. The only way to make your field stay green is that you buy lots of hay to feed your horse instead of grass. I recommend 2.5 or 3 acres PER horse. That way you don't have to spend lot's of money for hay. I would get a 100 foot or more measuring tape and make rough measurements of were you want to put Fencing.

If you plan on not having to give them hay or anything, then they should have at least 2 acres per horse, and even then they might need hay in the winter. If you give hay 24/7, then they can live on less than 1 acre per horse.

Hi, this all depends on whether the horses are going to be stables, or live out. Where my horse is kept with two other ponies they have just under seven acres!! Although a few years ago, these seven acres sustained nine horse. I would say that as a guide one acre to one horse.

The general rule of thumb is 1 acre per horse, but even with this, in the winter he needs hay because most likely there wont be enough grass to sustain him. I prefer at least 2 or even 3 acres per horse as this often provides them with enough forage. In an ideal situation, you would have at least 5 acres per horse. But you can make do with less than 1 acre if you provide free-choice quality hay. But if you do have less than 2 acres per horse, it is a MUST that you provide hay, at least in the winter, and in some places where grass is sparcer than where I live, you may need to give hay even if you have 3 acres per horse.

You don't have to have any 'acres'. You just have to be able to afford it.

How many acres per horse in Montana?

You will need more acres per horse in the southern part of Alberta than the north. Average is around 4 acres per horse, and up to 1.5 acre per horse in the northern parts. Though that's on excellent quality pasture: stocking rates may be a bit less on less-quality pasture. Not to mention that horses need room to run, unlike cattle, so you will need to add on a couple extra acres in addition to the amount that they will graze.
