1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 1

1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 = 1

From the above scale

1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2

Similarly

1/8 + 1/8 = 1/4

Mathematically this is done by

1/8 + 1/8 = 2/8 ( Sine the denominator is the same in both cases , at '8' , then you just add the numerators ( 1 + 1 = 2)

Since 2/8 has a common factor of '2' , you cancel down by '2' .

Hence 2/8 = 1/4
