How many joints are in the human body?

There is no definitive answer to this question. The first problem is that the number of bones in a body changes. A fetus has about 300 bones, but by the time of birth, many of them have fused together. The average adult human has 206 bones.

Also, what constitutes a "joint" is problematic. The skull is made up of a number of bony plates that knit together along their edges into a permanently fused structure that we think of as a single unit. Do we count each of those plates and where they meet each distinct other plate as a "joint"? Consequently, there is no simple or reliable answer to this question.

The number is certainly in the range of the mid-200s to the mid-300s.

The exact number of joints in the human body is contested because of the definition of a joint, however most anatomists would agree that it is between 300 to 400 joins. The question however is, what is the significance of these numbers if any, someone mentioned that in an ancient Chinese book it says 365, and Brian Stephenson mentioned that Muhammad said it was 360 and both of these numbers is close to the number of days in the year - now that is intriguing isn’t it? Maybe there is some mystery that we don’t know about and are yet to discover…

I tried to find a translation of the Chinese book online but couldn’t. I looked for the saying by Muhammad and found:

Abu Buraydah reported: The Messenger of God said, “Inside the human being are three hundred and sixty joints, and upon each of them charity is due.” They said, “Who can do that, O Messenger of God?” The Messenger said, “It is spittle in the mosque you clean, or something harmful on the road you move to the side. If you cannot find anything, it is enough to perform two cycles of forenoon prayer.”

So Muhammad is saying that 360 charitable actions are due on every human being every day including cleaning public places, removing harm from the road, etc. Now that is amazing…how many of us walk down the road and when we encounter broken beer bottles and other hazards we just walk around them!? This guy Muhammad was linking a biological fact to actions that made life better for everyone….not just quoting a number to demonstrate how much he knows, I find that intriguing
