If they are on the same circuit you only need 1 neutral wire in the circuit.

Another homework question? The wires could be Hot or Live, Neutral and Ground.

How many wires are needed for 110 volt?

Hot, neutral and ground.

Find out what wires do?

Wires just connect electricity cords/outlets.

What does neutral do?

Neutral wires are actually ground wires. They enable the circuit to be completed.

You are changing a light fixture but the wires are all the same color which one is the hot wire?

A light fixture will function normally either way. The hot and neutral wires are interchangeable. DANGER! This is only true of lighting fixtures!

What does neutral wire failure do?

Neutral wires are actually ground wires. They enable the circuit to be completed.

Do I need two ground wires -one for each socket- if I split an outlet?

No. You can split the hot feeds and you can split the neutral feed, but both outlets of a standard duplex receptacle share the ground.

Why can the neutral wire diameter be reduced in relationship to the phase wires?

The Neutral wire should be the same gauge and size of the phase wires. Only the Earth or Equipment wire can be smaller than the phase(hot) wires. <<>> On a three phase four wire distribution system the neutral can be reduced in size. The neutral only carries the unbalanced load current and should be sized to that current. The highest current load to neutral of the three legs is used to calculate the neutral sizing. There is no reduced neutral allowed on discharge lighting and non linear loads. A demand factor of 70% shall be permitted to be applied to that portion of the unbalanced load in excess of 200 A.

Can you mix two hot wires and neutral in same shut-off switch?

Yes two "hot" wires and a neutral can enter into a switch box. This is done on occasions where a three wire enters a switch box, drops off one circuit for the lighting and the other "hot" wire carries on to feed a receptacle circuit.

When running outlets in a series can you still use the outlet itself as a coupler or do you have to pigtail the wires then feed the outlet?

Just firmly connect the wires under the screws and that will couple them. Each outlet has two hot and two neutral screws; just connect the wires appropriately and make certain that the outlet is properly grounded.

How many wires are needed for a single phase 220 volt application?

Hot and neutral, or hot and hot, plus ground. (2 + 1) 2 hots a neutral and a ground 3+1

Why live and neutral wire essential for proper working of electrical circuit?

Two wires are always needed to supply electrical equipment so that the current has a complete circuit to flow in. One of the wires is earthed at the supply transformer, that one is called the neutral, and the other one is the live.
