I good way to remember these conversions is "there are two cups in a pint, two pints in a quart, two quarts in a half gallon and two half gallons in a gallon." So, 4 cups make a quart.
48 / 4 = 12 so 48 cups goes into 12 quarts.

14 US cups == just go to Google and type in "3.5 quarts in cups" and the Google calculator will convert for you. It is extremely handy.
Just once, exactly.
2 Quarts and 1 Pints equal 10 cups. There are 4 cups in each quart and 2 cups in each pint. So the first 4 cups go in the first quart. This leaves 6 cups. Another 4 cups go in the 2nd quart. This leaves 2 cups - just enough for a pint.
16 cups 1 quart = 4 cups 1 cup = 0.25 quart
