In Europe we all get charged by square meters when having carpet installed. It depends on the store. Not many years ago everyone in the US priced their carpet, pad, and installation by the square yard. Then someone realized they could advertise much lower prices if they changed everything to square feet. Now most flooring is sold by the square foot, but it seems most still install by the square yard (plus a surcharge for steps and odd shapes).
A square foot is a unit of area. A yard is a unit of distance. The two units are therefore incompatible.
And, for that matter, you are very unlikely to get a straight length of carpet - unless you have a pet worm to take care of.

In Ohio we charge 5.50 a yard, so technically that costs $6.58US a square meter. That price however does not include the actual carpet to be installed, or the 'cushion' or pad underneath the carpet, just the labor. retail price on some of the least expensive carpet i have seen (that was worth putting in) was around $8.40US a square meter. which with cushion would cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of $17.00US a square yard if you include cushion.
