The concept of a unique Palestinian Arab identity comes directly out of the Arab-Israeli conflict and so Palestinians (with that identity) have only been in the Gaza Strip since 1948, when the identity came into existence. However, Palestinians track themselves back to the general Levantine Arab population, which was culturally homogenous over Israel/Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. That identity goes back in the Gaza Strip to at least the 1200s CE if not earlier. Most of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip today, though, had ancestors in what is today Israel, prior to 1948, when 720,000 Palestinians fled during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948.
