You can't obtain the quantity in yard if you have 300 ft² by 3 in since the units are actually not compatible to each other unless you are referring to yd³, or you want to convert each quantity into yard for instance...

3X = 3,600 and X = 3/3,600 so X = 1,200

So, what you have then is an area that is 3 inches wide and 1,200 inches long. Convert that long side back into yards, and you have 1,200/3 = 400.

You have an area that is 3" wide and 1,200" long, or 3,600"2; 3,600"2 equals 300'2.
The question could be worded better, more clearly, but with the variables listed, that's about the best possible.
